Self-Portraiture Weekend

This weekend I have been on a workshop called Behind the Mirror, which focused on self- portraiture in photography and writing. The workshop was led by photographer Sara Teresa and writer Helen Mort, and run by The Writing Squad.

Before yesterday I hadn’t been photographed for three years.

A few years ago I experienced a delusion that people who were staring at me in public had cameras in their eyes and were taking photos of me. Since then I have not allowed anyone to take my picture. Recently I have been trying to take back control over the process by making short films which feature my body, but usually not my face. I decided to build on this by trying out photography. Still it was a risk, agreeing to go on the weekend, especially as I have been feeling quite vulnerable recently. A risk which I think paid off.

In the “Artist Book” section of this website you can see the book of photos and writing which I made over the course of the weekend.
